Jose Luis Garay, Sr. was born September 11, 1946 to Felix and Maria Garay in Cedral, San Luis Potosi, Mexico. He passed away July 22, 2020 at the age of 73. He is preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Antonia Ochoa. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 44 years, Maria Elba Garay, his brother, Jose Rafael Garay, his sisters, Sister Rose Carmel Garay, Constanza Morales, and Yolanda Rodriguez, his children, Araceli Garay, Jose Luis Garay, Jr., and Genieve Garay, and six grandchildren.
Throughout his career, and way after his retirement, Mr. Garay was the best teacher anyone could hope for. He could captivate an audience of any age with his jokes and delightful storytelling and ignited the love of learning to them in the process. He had an unshakable faith that would make us feel that everything was going to be ok. He instilled in his family his love of oldies music, having pride in our heritage, compassion for the most broken, and a kindness to all living things. His playful, humble, and sweet demeanor will be greatly missed, but never forgotten.
UPDATE: Due to Hurricane Hanna, graveside service has been moved to Friday, July 31, 2020 at 9:00 a.m. at Highland Memorial Park.
